fusion fest 2016 - faq & rules
10 Apr 2016 03:56 pmEver read or watched or heard something that you think would make for a great fusion setting (à la Harry Potter and His Dark Materials AUs)?
Here's a chance to write that fusion!
frequently asked questions
What's a fusion?
Quoting Fanlore, "A fusion is a type of fanwork which merges two or more fandoms by incorporating characters from one fandom into the setting of another as if they had always been there."
There's 3 ways you could go about doing a fusion, so depending on which one you choose, a fusion could mean:
1. Think Alternate Universe (AU), except instead of a fanfic that takes place in genre-based settings (like Western AU or Historical AU), the setting is another canon. Like Harry Potter fusions, which take characters from one canon and plonk them into the canon of the Harry Potter series, often making them students at Hogwarts.
2. Think Alternate Universe (AU), except instead of taking and using specific elements (often tropes) you like that are used in many canons (like reincarnation AUs), the element used is specific to a particular canon. Like His Dark Materials fusions, which take the idea of daemons from the His Dark Materials trilogy and plonk it into another canon, giving every character in it a daemon.
3. Think Alternate Universe (AU), except the characters of one canon are put into the shoes of characters from another canon. Like Pacific Rim fusions, where two characters are put into Mako and Raleigh's shoes and must pilot Jaegers and combat Kaijus.
What canons can I use for fusion settings?
You can use whatever canon you want for your fusion settings, however rare or popular they are. But one fic per X canon fusion per person is allowed.
What kind of fest is this? Is it a fanworks exchange or prompt fest?
The fest this round will be a writing fest where everyone writes whatever fusions they want. If there is enough interest in the fest, the format of next round might be changed to a fanworks exchange or prompt fest.
Where will the fest be hosted?
On Archive of Our Own at Fusion Fest 2016. The collection will be moderated (to make sure all fics are properly tagged), works and authors will be revealed after mod approval (i.e. made available for all to read) throughout the posting period.
Count me in, where do I sign up?
For this round there's no signups, if you want to participate all you have to do is get writing and posting!
What's the timeline for the fest?
The writing and posting period is 4 months.
15 April - the fest begins & the collection is open for posting
15 September - the fest ends & the collection is closed

rules
- minimum wordcount is 500
- one fic per X canon fusion per person (so someone can only write 1 Harry Potter fusion and not 2 or more)
- all fics must have Alternate Universe - X Canon Fusion added as a freeform tag (like Alternate Universe - Harry Potter Fusion) for easier searching and because they aren't straight up crossovers
- X canons (canons used for fusion settings) mustn't be tagged as fandom tags! (e.g. don't tag Harry Potter as a fandom tag if you're writing a Harry Potter fusion, it's not a straight up crossover!)
- the only exception for tagging canons used for fusion settings is if the fic's an actual crossover, as in characters from X canon meet and interact with characters from your other canon... but the freeform tag Crossover must be added if that's the case! (e.g. BBC Sherlock fic with Harry Potter fusion where Sherlock went to Hogwarts in the same year as Harry, it would be tagged fandom: BBC Sherlock, Harry Potter and freeform: Alternate Universe - Harry Potter Fusion, Crossover)
