Jane Yolen, "Sister Light, Sister Dark"/the Great Alta series

Jane Yolen wrote a set of books about a group of warrior women who all have called a "dark sister", a twin, who they call up out of the darkness through a full-sized mirror in a ritual that all girls go through after training and purifying themselves. Their "dark sisters" only appear at night, in moonlight or man-made light, and they have their own personalities and knowledge, but they are inseparable from their "light sisters."

SO YES, the reasons why this fusion is awesome:

1) Twins! Secret magic twins!

2) Classic: Double the number of female characters, like that!

3) Worldbuilding: Is it only possible for women to perform the ritual? Is it a thing that other people have learned from these women? How difficult is it? How weird are people who have figured it out considered?

4) Who would be the worst person to get a secret magic twin in your canon? Because I can think of a few.
